All New ALBUM RANKINGS !!!

Postby Been Mistaken For Dead » Sat Apr 06, 2013 4:31 pm

So I scanned through all the recent threads and I couldn't find one on where people would rank Delta Machine in the list of the 13 DM Studio releases.

So what would your ranking be .... order from best to worst and a two or three sentence review of the album and why you love/hate/meh it.

1. Violator - No need to say why. It's the most consistent album, with in my opinion only one weak track (Blue Dress).

2. Songs of Faith and Devotion - more consistent song writing, great production , great songs only behind Violator for me because there are a couple of weak tracks.

3. Black Celebration - Dark, melodic, great production, great songwriting. The only thing that drags this album down is that it hasn't aged as well as Violator and SOFAD.

4. Some Great Reward - full of classics , a bunch of hits, great song writing.

5. Delta Machine - a return to form, songs that can hold there own against any in the extensive catalog. Great B-sides.

6. Ultra - Some really great high points, but there is some dead weight on this album.

7. Music For the Masses - Some really great songs, superb production especially of the precussion. Short album, pleasure Little Treasure and Agent Orange should have been on the album.

8. Playing the Angel - an album that wasn't in the top 10 for me, but it has aged really well. Some strong songs, with a few duds mixed in. Dave's debut as a songwriter ( really shows his inexperience on "I want it all").

9. Construction time again - some classics like "Everything Counts" , "Told you So" , "Pipeline" and "Shame" mixed with a spattering of weak stuff "More then a Party" and the "Landscape is changing". Sounds a little dated.

10. Exciter - a few good songs, but the mood on this album is strange. The songs lack something and the Martin sung songs are extrememly weak for me.

11. A Broken Frame - it is a better album for what it represents (Martin's emmergence as a writer) then the music on it. Hasn't aged well.

12.Speak and Spell - hard to believe this is the same band that released SOFAD, has a couple tracks that are fun, catchy and it shows potential.

13. Songs of The Universe - this album really went in a direction that didn't suit the band, I think they tried to re-make a brighter, possibly poppier Violator and it didn't really work. The production is noisy and the songwriting is sloppy.... "Wrong" and "Peace" are the High points. "Hole to Feed" and "Jezebel" are two of the worst. The saving grace is some very good B-sides "Ghost" and "Light"....

So that's my personal ranking of the Depeche Mode catalog of studio albums. There is obviously so much more to this band in B-sides, remixes, Live, Video, Bare versions etc. etc. etc. But this thread is about just the titled studio album releases.

What does your list look like?

Here's mine and fav. song from each:

1. Playing The Angel (Nothing's Impossible)
2. Songs Of Faith And Devotion (Mercy in You)
3. Delta Machine (Broken)
4. Ultra (Useless)
5. Violator (Clean)
6. Exciter (Dead Of Night)
7. Black Celebration (Stripped)
8. Music For The Masses (To Have & To Hold)
9. Sounds Of The Universe (Wrong)
10. Some Great Reward (Blasphemous Rumors)

PS. I dont rank their early releases since I havent find any material in those albums that appeals my taste in music, before this I had a top 9 list only... now I have a top 10 thanks to DeMa and knocked off Ultra from the 3rd spot.

I will give my full reply later when I've given it some careful consideration. But in the meantime, I'm just wowed that you consider Blue Dress the weak track on Violator. Can I ask what it is that you don't like about it? Not judging, I just think it's SO sexy and gorgeous, I have to wonder what you find undesirable there....
